Friends of Nevis

14 July 2014

Ben Nevis (Beinn Nibheis), often affectionately referred to as ‘mountain of heaven’ is the highest mountain in the British Isles; beginning its rise from sea-level on the shores of Loch Linnhe, to tower 4,406ft (1,344m) above the town of Fort William, attracting thousands of visitors to the area each year.

A community based conservation charity, Friends of Nevis aims to preserve, protect and support the iconic Ben Nevis and its stunning surrounding landscape which boasts mountains, wild land, glen and river Nevis as well as a range of tourist attractions including a visitor centre and various low and higher level walks.

The group engages with volunteers, families and the local community to organise a variety of activities such as path repairs and litter picking and also works with local schools and colleges to educate young people on the risks dropping litter poses to wildlife.

In early spring 2014, the group organised a Litter Sweep and Curling Pond Tidy Up and invited local volunteers to help out. Fraser Lennox who leads the Events Team at Foundation Scotland was one such volunteer. He said, “Armed with litter pickers and bin bags, we worked in teams to collect and dispose of any litter we could find. There was a great sense of community spirit and it was a real delight to see volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to preserve and look after the stunning landscape.”

A small, unrestricted grant can be an invaluable lifeline to a small group like Friends of Nevis. For instance, a recent Friends Of Nevisaward of £1100 from the Caledonian Challenge, enabled the group to buy a new strimmer to help cut back grass and maintain an area of land at the entrance to Glen Nevis. A simple piece of equipment like this can transform the way the group carry out essential path maintenance work; paths which are used by thousands of walkers each year.

Friends of Nevis volunteers have supported teams at Registration on the Caledonian Challenge, Foundation Scotland's popular fundraising event, for several years.
