Lochaber Music School

06 March 2014

Lochaber Music School has been supporting and enriching the musical development of Lochaber children for more than twenty five years.

Established in 1987, the charity is founded upon the belief that high quality musical training can encourage and enrich children’s physical, mental and social development, providing them with a wide range of academic and social skills.

The music programme offers a diverse range of tuition classes and workshops for children of all ages.

The school introduces the very youngest of children (from 6 months old!) to the magical world of music through rhythm, pitch, movement and song. For ages 4 and above, the Sound Start programme takes children into rhythm and pitch games, storytelling, singing and percussion instruments preparing them for the opportunity to learn instruments like violin, cello or Clàrsach (the Gaelic harp). It also supports older children to grow in confidence and maturity with their solo and ensemble playing, singing, theoretical understanding, aural training and musicianship.

Indeed, the school has an impressive history of excellence with former pupils regularly being accepted into the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the Highland Regional Youth Orchestra in Inverness. Many have gone on to attend Music College and enjoyed professional careers in music whilst others make music a worthwhile and enjoyable hobby, playing in various amateur ensembles and orchestras. Current pupils regularly showcase their talents by performing at community events and concerts – providing great enjoyment to local audiences.

In 2013, Lochaber Music School received a grant of £2000 from Foundation Scotland to help towards the cost of employing two music tutors.

Peter Rose, Musical Director said, “Our school, which serves the musical needs of 150 children, has throughout its illustrious 27 year old history depended very much upon the generosity of parents, friends and grant awarding bodies.

“We are delighted to have been awarded £2000 which will help us to continue to provide the highest quality of musical tuition in a variety of disciplines usually only to be found in our larger cities.”
