Pennycook and Sinderin Courts Residents Association

04 February 2013

This Residents Association works on behalf of the 29 elderly people who live within two Home Scotland sheltered housing complexes in Dundee’s West End. Supported by their local councillor and CVS, the group formed in 2009 in response to on-going access, refuse collection and parking issues around the complexes. A committee of 11 meets regularly to discuss tenants concerns and opportunities for promoting their rights, and maintaining and improving their housing conditions, amenities and immediate environment. They also encourage a range of social, educational and recreational activity for residents.

Pennycook and Sinderins Court residents association received funding from  Al Maktoum Community Awards Fund to upgrade a meeting and seating area which lies between the two complexes.

The residents association had identified two benches and a corner which had fallen into disrepair. Their aim was to replace the benches and create a welcoming area which could be used by residents of the sheltered accommodation block as well as the wider community.

The group worked with Blackness primary school who created some small beds of flowers which they will plant and maintain as part of their Eco School responsibility.

The funding has helped transform a drab looking area into a welcoming place to relax - real asset for the group.
This is an example of a good community driven initiative, small in scale and low in risk which bringing together different sections of the community towards a positive outcome – both for the residents and the wider community.
