Woodend Arts

25 April 2013

A well-established organisation formed by local people to support cultural development in rural Aberdeenshire.  They have gone from strength to strength over the years, from a small project based voluntary organisation to now where they act as a regional hub for a vast programme of cultural activity, supporting geographically isolated communities.

Its “Third Stage” project received £5000 from the Caledonian Challenge Walkers fund.  Third Stage enables older people, especially those suffering isolation or disability, to participate in the Arts. The Third Stage project has been going ten years and has run over 300 workshops and 40 choir rehearsals and concerts -all organised by older people for older  people.

The funding enabled the group to support a year long programme of art and craft workshops and choir sessions.

The sessions are a vital part of helping with participants’ overall health and well being, providing them with the opportunity to be creative and sociable, thereby reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

“What a wonderful creative time we had, such a joy to be with a group of people who had such zest and energy in artistic expression.    Third Stage is an important community asset which should be valued for its contribution to individuals not only for its social networking capacity but as a forum which promotes self empowerment and development for a group of people in our society.” Tuk Chee Phung, Tutor

The funding also helped leverage further funds from Awards for All.
