Blackford Community Fund Celebrates 17 Years of Impact
Blackford Fund Case Study reveals how tailored grantmaking has transformed community life.
Over the last 17 years, the Blackford Community Fund has awarded a huge £374,540 in grants to 35 local organisations, supporting everything from intergenerational lunches to the area’s annual Highland Games celebrations. These grants, alongside some inspiring stories are highlighted in a comprehensive new case study undertaken by Foundation Scotland.
The Fund has become a cornerstone of community life in this 900-resident village. Its sustainable funding model combines annual community benefit payments from the EDF Power Solutions Burnfoot windfarm cluster with investment income from a £250,000 donation by Ochil Developments Ltd.
The case study highlights that over 65% of funded organisations receive repeat support, with grants making a positive difference across four key areas: bringing people together, celebrating Blackford's musical and cultural heritage, helping older residents stay connected, and improving the look and feel of the village.
The Fund's responsive approach proved particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite lockdown challenges, the community decision making Panel continued awarding grants, supporting initiatives such as the Community Cycling Club and Community Gardens that helped maintain social connections safely.
With a high percentage of Blackford's population over 60 years of age, the Fund has prioritised projects supporting older residents, providing £25,840 for intergenerational lunches which bring together seniors and primary school pupils, and nearly £40,000 over ten years to help Blackford Bowling Club make its facilities more accessible.
Looking ahead, the Fund has begun piloting three-year grants for community-wide events, ensuring these important local traditions remain affordable and accessible to all residents.
