The people, the stories and the moments that made us
From those who helped establish Foundation Scotland in 1996 to those who joined us just weeks ago, our 30th anniversary celebration brought together people from across three decades of making a difference.
There's something rather special about bringing people together who have shared a journey spanning 30 years, some who were there right at the beginning, others who joined along the way, and a few who are only just getting to know us.
That's exactly what happened when we took a trip down memory lane, gathering in The Caves in Edinburgh – a place with a few of its own stories to tell - one early autumnal evening in September to celebrate Foundation Scotland's 30th birthday.
It was a wonderful meeting of old friends, new faces, shared memories and plenty of laughter. Among our guests were those who had helped establish and develop the Foundation, alongside colleagues, partners and community change-makers, all connected in different ways to our story.
And what better way to celebrate than to let some of those people tell the story themselves?
Rather than a traditional historical narrative, we invited some familiar faces to share their memories, experiences and reflections. We heard from Jane Salmonson, who established the Caledonian Foundation - the name by which we were first known, and our first Chief Executive, Alan Hobbett, who took us back to those early days when the organisation was finding its feet.
There were tales of the legendary Caledonian Challenge from founder Angus MacDonald MP, reflections on the beginnings of our community benefit work, and stories about the partnerships and pioneering approaches that have helped us grow and evolve. We also heard from community organisations we are working with today who exemplified the power of trusting communities to make their own decisions to create lasting change.
Together, these stories brought to life the many different chapters of Foundation Scotland's history, and the extraordinary variety of people who have been part of it.
There were plenty of laughs, some fond memories and perhaps a few surprises along the way. But what stood out most was the strength of the relationships that have sustained Foundation Scotland through three decades of change.
As our Chief Executive, Giles Ruck, reflected during the evening, our journey has been one of trying new things, listening to communities, learning what works and, when necessary, changing direction.
Over the past 30 years, Foundation Scotland has invested more than £270 million in communities across Scotland, but the real story is about much more than the money.
It's about the people who have trusted us, worked alongside us, challenged us and inspired us. The communities who know what matters most to them. And the countless individuals and organisations who have helped turn good ideas into lasting change. Our anniversary was a chance to celebrate all of them.
To everyone who joined us at The Caves, and to everyone who has played a part in our story over the past 30 years, thank you.
As Giles reminded us on the night, when people come together, extraordinary things can happen.
Here's to the next 30 years, and all the stories still to be written…
