Christmas Magic Comes to Ardersier: How a Small Grant Created Big Smiles

The Ardersier Primary Parent and Teacher Association (PTA) successfully secured £1,000 in funding from the Haventus Ardersier Port Community Benefit Fund to bring a Christmas pantomime to the school children.

When the newly formed Ardersier Primary Parent and Teacher Association (PTA) applied for their very first grant in 2024, they had a simple goal: to bring the magic of Christmas pantomime to all 125 children at the school. Established in September 2024, the Ardersier Primary PTA had just eight core members and no formal committee structure.

The annual Christmas pantomime by M&M Theatrical Productions had become a highlight of the festive calendar, eagerly anticipated by children from nursery age through Primary 7. The PTA recognised that taking 125 children to a theatre would be prohibitively expensive for many families, so bringing the performance to school would ensure every child could enjoy the performance regardless of their family's financial circumstances.

The performance cost £1,198. Combined with £198 from school funds, the funding secured from the fund covered the entire cost, allowing every child to attend completely free of charge during school hours. The PTA booked M&M Theatrical Productions, which had performed at the school for several years.

The pantomime was delivered during school hours, removing any barriers to participation and ensuring 100% attendance from all 125 pupils. The pantomime was such a success that the school immediately re-booked the company for the following year. Feedback from staff and students was unanimously positive. The project demonstrated community collaboration, with the new PTA working alongside the school, local councillor, and Ardersier Hub.

The success built the PTA's confidence and capabilities in planning and fundraising. With a year's experience, they now feel more capable of raising funds independently for future activities. The Christmas pantomime has become a firmly established annual tradition, creating a sustainable model for bringing cultural experiences directly to the children.

By investing £1,000 in a simple but meaningful project, the grant helped establish a thriving PTA and ensured that 125 children will continue to experience live theatre every Christmas – demonstrating how small awards can yield significant returns in community spirit and childhood joy. By supporting this project, the activity contributes to the purpose of the Fund to promote community spirit and encourage community activity.
