William Grant

Youth Opportunities Fund

Background

The Grant Gordon family, owners of William Grant & Sons, have long held and interest in philanthropy.  The family decided to develop a more strategic way of giving by setting up the William Grant Youth Opportunities Fund with Foundation Scotland supporting communities in, and around, Bellshill, Girvan and Dufftown.

Aim

Girvan, South Ayrshire and Dufftown, Moray

In Girvan and Dufftown, the William Grant Youth Opportunities Fund aims to improve the life chances of young people not in education, employment or training, or children and young people at risk of becoming so. This is achieved through timely investments in organisations delivering education, training and development programmes. In the longer term, the investments made by the Fund are intended to contribute to the following outcomes:

  • Young people have increased access to education, employment and training opportunities and increased self-belief so that they can engage with these choices
  • An increased engagement in personal development by young people and a reduction in the numbers of young people not in employment, education or training.

Bellshill, Hamilton, Motherwell areas and their environs: North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire

The Fund in the Lanarkshire area will make partnership investments to support strategic, early-intervention initiatives focused in a particular locality that will deliver a holistic, integrated pathway of support for 8 – 14 year olds as they move through the transition from child to young adult. Supported initiatives will be centred on the needs of the young person and should demonstrate how the services provided will build upon links between home, school and the wider community. We wish to fund partnership approaches that can provide joined-up support for children and young people so that:

  • Children and young people have increased access to support, education, employment and learning opportunities to enable them to reach and sustain a positive destination into employment, training and education.
  • Children and young people have increased engagement in their personal development and have improved self-belief
  • Children and young people have increased access to a range of positive role models in the transition from child to young adult
